Public holidays in Brazil are regulated by federal, municipal and statewide legislation. Although the majority of public holidays are observed nationwide, each city and state may offer employees time off for local observances and religious celebrations.
If a national holiday falls on a Sunday, employees are allowed to observe the holiday on the following Monday. General and state elections are considered public holidays, held on the first and last Sundays in October.
