Father’s Day in Brazil is not a public holiday, but it is widely celebrated all over this large, diverse country nonetheless. Also, the observance is kept on the second Sunday of August instead of in June as in many other countries.

The reason for the date was to make it coincide with Saint Joachim’s Day, which is dedicated to the Catholic patron saint of fathers. This particular saint is said to have been the father of Mary, who became the mother of Jesus Christ. Later, the date of Saint Joachim’s Day was moved to July, while the Brazilian date of Father’s Day stayed in August.
In Brazil, as in many other countries that celebrate Father’s Day, it is customary for children to give a gift and a card to their father and to spend time with him at home or in some special activity outside the home.
